Being the huge beauty junkie that I am, I've always wondered what the different was between "men's skin care" and "women's skin care". So one evening with a glass of rosé (or two) in hand, I decided to do some research. What I discovered is that men's skin is different from women's skin, but in most cases the products we use are realtively the same. Before I explain why, here are some interesting facts about men's skin that you should know about...
1. Men's skin is typically 25 per cent thicker than women's skin.
2. Men produce far more sebum/oil than women do because of our higher testosterone levels.
3. The hair follicles on our faces are much thicker.
4. Men produce more collagen than women.
5. Men are more prone to SKIN CANCER than women.
What does all of this mean?...
Simply put, men's skin is clearly different from women's skin but a lot of the products we use are formulated the same way. According to an article that I read in The New York Times, GOOD men's skin care is formulated with different components that cater to our thicker skin. But generally speaking products that are marketed towards women work just as well for us guys. This means the biggest different between men's and women's skin care in most cases, is the way they're marketed. More specifically, the packaging and scent of the products.
What this means is that you shouldn't be afraid to use products that aren't specifically marketed towards men. I've been using skin care products that are marketed towards women for years, and I've found so many products that I swear by. That being said, regardless if you're a dude that's into grooming or not, it's important to understand that it's crucial for men to take care of their skin too. You shouldn't be judged for wanting to take care of your skin, and no it doesn't make you more feminine. Incorporating skin care into your daily routine keeps you looking fresher, more awake and will help prevent signs of aging.
On that note, I've tested tons of skin care lines that are marketed towards men, but the one I really fell in love with recently is V76 by Vaughn. They sent me a selection of their products and to be completely honest I didn't have high expectations. Turns out, I ended up loving everything! They're no-fuss, easy to use, and most importantly they deliver results. Below are links to the products that I love.
What are your thoughts on men's skin care vs. women's skin care? Did you think it was just a marketing ploy? Let me know in the comment section below!
